ASPERGER SYNDROME - Marta Moyano Sarmiento

A few days ago we saw a video about people with Asperger Syndrome. The people talked about their own experiences and how they dealt with this syndrome.

First, I would like to explain the idea that I had about Asperger Syndrome. I thought Asperger people was unable to socialise, to maintain a conversation with other people. I also thought that they obsessed with an specific subject and they create their world around that subject and that is the reason why they don’t socialise. Then, I thought that they never expressed feelings and that they felt uncomfortable if someone expressed feelings to them. I thought that they were only conscious of their own life so they don’t care about others problems (they don’t share, they are not empathic, kind, etc. Asperger people don’t recognise irony or doble sense expressions.
On the other hand, I knew that tall of these things or characteristics could change if the Asperger person lives in a good climate or at least if they live in an environment where people know its problem and can help them. I saw this in a films which I like a lot called ‘My name is Kahn’. In the film we can se the evolution of Khan, who has Asperger syndrome since he was born. Here I attach a Little video for you to see it. Hope you like it!

Now, I’m going to summarize the main ideas I get from the video and finally I will make a final conclussion linking my previous ideas with the ideas I have after sawing the video.
As I have said before, like in the film, the people of the video show that they are people but with an specific type of difficulty. They behave in that way because they don’t fell connceted to the real world, they don’t understand it so they decide to isolate and build they own world where they are comfortable.

In conclussion, I some day I have an Asperger student in my class I think that, first of all I will try to make this student feel comfrotable. For this, I think that the school should propose a talk about Asperger syndrome and other types of disabilities in general so students will be concerned about the general way that most Aspergers act, think and express. Children awareness is important as they are the ones who are going to expend most of their time with Asperger students.
Then, I will try to treat the Asperger student the same as their peers but always taking into account the difficulties he or she could find due to its syndrome. And the final aim will be to make this student understand the world so he or she could enjoy and will avoid the idea of “leaving our world” and go to the world they have bilt for being comfortable.
